As training finished the BBQ was fired up, the bar started serving cold beer and the RCL and La Hulpe U14s players ran onto the pitch to load cheers. The RCL boys looked understandably nervous as it was the first time they had played 15 a side Rugby on a full size pitch, and with a crowd of 150 people the pressure was really on.
RCL started the match the brighter of the two sides, dominating the early exchanges and justifiably taking the lead through Chobe Sweetnam breaking clear down the left wing to score under the posts. La Hulpe came back strongly forcing RCL to defend on their own try line for large periods before finally scoring in the corner to leave the score 5- 5 at half time. The second half began perfectly for RCL as fly half Hugo Bertani broke clear from mid field to run 40 meters to restore the RCL advantage. La Hulpe refused to give up against the same RCL team they had beaten comfortably twice last season. Sean Hagermark made a string of heroic tackles to deny the visitors but eventually the scores were leveled with 10 minutes remaining with another scrambled try scored in the corner. The final few minutes were a battle of attrition for both teams as the temperature rose to the mid 20s. La Hulpe looked the stronger team but RCL refused to concede and as the final whistle blew both sets of coaches agreed it was fair result.
RCL U14s team manager Paolo Tarakdjian “This was a fantastic performance for the boys, they were really nervous playing in front of so many spectators against a very strong team who have already played and won this season against ASUB, we have a very small squad, we desperately need new players but this result shows our boys deserve to be in the top division (out of 5 at U14s level in Belgium) ”
RCL Juniors Head Coach Alex Van Zeeland “That was the biggest crowd ever for a junior match in Luxembourg, the atmosphere was amazing. Hats off to the boys from both teams, they played some really really nice Rugby in a great spirit”
Many thanks to Vinny form EireLux for supplying the delicious BBQ and the Tube for the delicious cold beer. In other results the U16s continued their unbeaten start to the season at Black Star BWest, winning 61-0, as they push for promotion and a quick return to division one by December.
Next week the U8s, U10s, U12s and U14s all play away in Belgium.
